I'm sorry if I wasn't a little more clear in my complaining on my last post. If you look back, it seems that I inspired a comment thread listing all the great musical acts that my dad is proud to call Canadian. This was not quite my point. I respect Gordon Downie as our countries second-greatest lyricist and poet, but damned if I can stand to hear him sing for more than 3 minutes at a time.
What I was bemoaning about was these ridiculous indie supergroups that are achieving such undue accolades. Sure, you've got 3 violinists and some dude who can play the dulcimer, but why don't you fix the damn metronome first? In the indie scene, it's frustrating to see a lack of structure being percieved as artistic merit. Here's an idea: Broken Social Scene can change their name to Canadiohead. If not, that's what I'll call them anyways.

I knew they were missing something. Tell you what though: If you can correctly guess Canda's #1 singer songwriter, I'll give you 10 points.
Don't give me any crap about how something like that is subjective though. It's not.
Anne Murray?
That guy from Bare Naked Ladies? The fat one.
Oh, I know, that guy from Swollen Members who looks like Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury!
Paul Anka!
I'm pretty sure you mean Ron Sexsmith.
I'm quite positive I'm right. Boo ya 10 points.
-Way to try sarcasmos.
Colm:
You're not allowed to listen to music anymore.
what did I say? :( I'm crying inside.
-But Ron has such curly locks...
Sorry, I just disagree with you. You can still listen to music.
In any case, best singer/songwriter is either Neil Young or Gordon Lightfoot, depending on who you like better. I like Neil Young, so he's my choice.
Gordon Lightfoot? Are you serious? I'd be down with Neil Young though.
Have you ever even listened to Gordon Lightfoot?
On second thought, I take that back. Neil Young, no question. You're right Colm, Sexsmith gets some props, but he's not at the top (and neither is Lightfoot). Neil Young wins. Hands down!
Also, MATT DAMON
Wow, I can't believe you guys. After the sarcasm wore off, you guys still couldn't get it right. Colm came the closest with Ron Sexsmith. However, he is still wrong. Canada's greatest singer/songwriter is Hawksley Workman. Nice try though.
Hahaha! Good one, man. No, really, who?
Ok, ok, Hawksley Workman is pretty good. The #1 Canadian Singer/Songwriter, though? No. Way. In. Hell.
ok first, I thought we were talking now, as in newbies. I don't even think of neil young as canadian, he belongs to the world. He hands down wins. Bruce Cockburn is sweet (more for his guitar skills), lightfoot is solid, but young is amazing. No question. I still like sexsmith much more than workman. That guy pisses me off for some reason. He's good, but... its just easy not to like him.
Hi, sorry I'm late. Marathon ON is not a hotbed of internet activity.
But Hawksley Workman? No fucking way. No no no no no. I'm not putting in any votes, because you'll all just laugh at me. (Mostly b/c I have no opinion on the matter -- very few of the Cdn artists I listen to write their own stuff) But I don't think Worksman is a particularly good singer, and I can't comment about his writing because I hated his single (you know, the annoying one) so much that I crashed into a tree every time it came on the radio just so that I wouldn't have to listen to it.
Oh wait, I change my mind. Jann Fucking Arden man! Jann Arden! (Although both Rita McNeil & Anne Murray would make close seconds)
Really? I think Workman is decent, I just don't think he has the volume of work that other people on the "list" have.
