The Grand(addy) Finale

I don't really have that many albums to talk about this week, last week was too good. I'll start with Grandaddy's latest and last ever album, Just Like the Fambly Cat. Having recently broken up, I was kind of hoping to hear some didactic songs of some sort, but instead it's the same wit and whimsy that we've come to expect. It's a good album, but Sumday was better.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs team up to cover the first half of the Forrest Gump soundtrack in Under the Covers Vol. 1. Alternative folk covers to songs from the 60's is pretty cool, and they take some pretty popular ones to rework. I'm just glad to be able to listen to a cover album that isn't on Fat Wreck Chords.

Speaking of cover albums, did I tell you guys about the soundtrack to Stubbs the Zombie? It's really rad, you've got alternative and indie bands like Death Cab and The Dandy Warhols and Rogue Wave covering the most recognizable songs of the 50's. Listening to Cake do a competent and catchy Sinatra cover is really an awesome thing. The Flaming Lips are on there too, covering If I Only Had A Brain, from The Wizard of Oz. This is especially interesting if you're familiar with the 1999 KCRW session that The Lips played, wherein Wayne Coyne explains his creepy theory of Scarecrow Syndrome. Did I say especially interesting? I meant to say creepy as all hell gets out.

That's it for now. Just a reminder kids, the BBQ is on the 20th, and if you're reading this you're invited. Except for that spammer who keeps trying to advertise porn in my comments section. You can go back to eating Kraft Dinner and Kraft Dinner alone in your mom's basement.
